Just past Avalanche Divide, there is a cave, it's pretty well hidden, but if you have been there enough times before and know what to look for, you can find it. After lunch we went on a mission into the dark world.
Right........., I mentioned we got over 700" of snow last winter.
The entrance to the cave with Avalanche Canyon and Iceflow Lake in the background.
The cave runs a legitimate 200-300 yards back into "The Wall." At the very back end of it is an ice chamber. Chels, cooling off on the ice.
Literally chillin at the end of the maze.
Hiking back to our packs after the cave en route to our camping spot for the night.
There was a "shortcut" that I promised Chels would save time to our camp! But....., it was super steep with tons of loose shale rock to contend with. Always fun when tired and carrying a heavy pack.
Loose enough rock to give you the one step up and two steps back feeling.
Pineapple Pass, top of the shortcut, just before dropping into the fabled "Alaska Basin."
En route to skinned knees and Alaska Basin.
The mountains are confused. Even though it is early September, the snowpack, wildflowers, berries, water, etc....all think it is still the middle of July.
The Wyoming state flower....the Indian Paintbrush. Your fun fact for the day.
We hoofed it up and out of Alaska Basin and over to the nearby Basin Lakes area to set up shop for the night. In need of a swim, I went for it in the easily named "Mirror Lake."
Chels' happy place. Beautiful scenery, book in hand, and me, cooking dinner!
